On the main page there are live "current games" and "players online" numbers.
hi, if you click in your "elo" for a particular variant, (in the left column of your profile page), it will open a stats page where you can click in the percentile (for example: "you play better than 85,3% of classical players").
After that you will see a graph representing the distribution of players on "elo" and on top of it the number of how many people played that variant of the game in that week. It's not the total number of accounts ofc, but at least can give you an idea on how many people are active in this site.

My guess is that there are around 250.000 active players
I've been a lichess member for two years and can tell you that player base has grown dramatically.
