If you look at the gift and present icons available in internet it's a very nice one which was choosen.
The perspective of the icon makes the gift look big. The gift is red (color of hot temperature) and it's like a cube.
It looks expensive and if you give away something you sometimes want to have it too..
They tell you about the gift, because it's invincible to us we wouldn't recognize it or it's so present we would think lichess was hacked.
First guess its a new server.
Second guess it's a new GUI.
As we all know trust your intuition and your first guess.

It's not a server :) I add servers regularly to cope with the growth and I don't think it deserves blog posts!

Crazyhouse/bughouse would certainly deserve a hype, but thibault said just a week ago on reddit that it wasn't possible as of now... (maybe that was just to distract us though?)
I'd say it'll be something like a league system, or a big overhaul of the site's non-chess features (e.g. the forums).
