Israel appears to be held to a higher standard than Syria, a craven abuser of human rights. By China, also a horrible abuser of human rights, as well as probably every other country in the world. That is incredibly hypocritical.
Also, I stand with Ukraine, and my thoughts are with its people as they suffer at the hands of Putin, and his hand picked elites.
It would be really dumb for Putin to take Ukraine.
First of all:
Sanctions will take quite the toll. And China seems to be semi-neutral in the conflict, adopting a "wait and watch" attitude.
Second of all:
If he does manage to, yet again, sanctions will mess up Russia. If China attempts to help Russia in this manner, that could have major effects on world politics that could very much lead to a world war. If a world war happens, it'll probably be a stalemate, even if Russia, China, and even North Korea by chance team up together. Or it'll be a nuclear war, which will destroy the infrastructure of civilization. This won't be helpful to either side.
And finally:
Appeasement will eventually fail if Russia takes other countries on top of Ukraine.
Russia's going nowhere with this.

It's quite annoying to see all EU and NATO governments saying they stand with Ukraine and the only form of action they seem to be taking is sanctions. Sure, economic sanctions can be a real danger to a country's stability but I think a military response is a greater deterrent. They all say that Ukraine is fighting for the name of Europe, then why is one country "defending" an entire continent from a global super power? What makes us think Putin will stop at Ukraine? Reminds me of Appeasement during the 1930's...
There are numerous if not an abundance of other channels or forums to discuss about politics or even an ongoing war.
I would be happy all commentators here at least restrict themselves to the issues how these events may affect the "chessworld".

I will repeat what I wrote in an earlier thread that unfortunately got deleted later during the day.
Punishing common Russian citizens for their murderous dictator's actions is not right and not what Lichess should do.
I personally know many Russian people who just like most of us didn't want this war and are calling for it to stop. We are today unfortunately witnessing a figure like Stalin 2.0, who knows no better than to bring war to millions of innocent people. My prays go to all the people in Ukraine, and for this war to stop.

I think it is a good idea to disconnect all russian chessplayer from Lichess. Then they will maybe be frustrated and join the resistance among average russians. Putin has started something that can easily escalate to a nuclear war... (check for urself, go to Youtube and search for "amost nuclear war") Norway has borders to Russia, but we have not been invaded (yet...) Have a nice evening everyone :)
