At the top level, the Poisoned Pawn Najdorf is one of the most studied lines in all of chess. It has been famously played by Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, and more recently by MVL. White sacrifices the b2 pawn in exchange for active play, a huge lead in development, and a few tempi. In exchange, black gets the b2 pawn and a liberated position since white can no longer build up for a huge kingside attack when there are more pressing concerns on the queenside.
